Cracking the Code to get a job
While companies and governments have been shedding jobs and paring back benefits, tech job openings continue to soar. According to Fortune magazine, software developers who specialize in applications will rise by over 30% by 2018. Jobs for computer system analysts will jump 20%.
And the pay is good – average salaries are around $94,000 a year.
That is good news for the hoards of young people who are already in the process of switching their college major from art history to computer science, but what about the rest of us?
Zach Sims thinks he has the answer. Or at least some much needed help. Anxious to upgrade his own considerable computer skills, the 21-year-old Connecticut native teamed up with a Columbia University friend Ryan Bubinski and started Codecademy, a free website which teaches the basics of writing computer code.
In the first four days of 2012 alone, the site has signed up more than 130,000 new users.
"I think we knew that programming was going to be the new version of literacy but at the same time it's pretty staggering to see the number of people who have signed up," said Sims.
You need to have Google Chrome or Firefox to access the site, but once you are on it, it is completely free and extremely easy to navigate. The site is designed so that people with no experience in coding can use it, but it is also easy enough to jump ahead if you have some background and just want to improve on your skills.
Sims makes no bones about the fact that this site isn't going to suddenly make you a computer expert or guarantee you a job. But it can help you gain the knowledge to build a website to support your small business.
Codecamy has only been up and running since August, but Sims said he is committed to keeping the site free to users and wants to avoid turning to advertising to raise revenue. Instead, he hopes to a team up with corporations who may want to use the site to recruit.
As you can see from the piece we shot, my first attempt was a little rocky, but I am going to try and do the course. It may not get me my next promotion, but I hope it will help me better understand the gadgets which have become indispensible to me.

Skype says crash followed Windows security update
Skype said that the load placed on its system as computers rebooted after receiving a routine set of patches from Microsoft's Windows Update service revealed a previously unknown bug in the Skype software.
Although the Skype network has a built-in self-healing function, the bug within the network resource allocation algorithm prevented the function from working as designed, according to the company.
Skype has identified the bug, which was a design error and not caused by hackers, it said. The company has already introduced "a number of improvements" to its software to help resolve the problem.
However, Skype provided no details on why Microsoft's monthly Windows upgrades have not caused problems in the past, nor whether future upgrades could trigger a similar network outage.
Knowing exactly what happed to the Skype network is difficult because the company uses proprietary technology and says little about it in public.
While analysts agree that Skype has a relatively good service track record, the company needs to be careful that outages of this type don't repeat themselves.
"They'll get away with this one or maybe even twice but if it becomes a succession of events, then people will say it's not for me," said Mark Main, senior analyst with Ovum.
The outage, Main added, is not beneficial to the goals of Skype's parent company, eBay, which has said that it wants the VOIP operator to make more money from existing customers rather than enlarge its customer base.
Ian Fogg, senior analyst with Jupiter Research, said Skype needs to act quickly to regain customer trust. "Peer-to-peer VOIP companies like Skype need to take another look at their engineering resources and slightly take the foot off the pedal and make sure that what they do is reliable," he said.

Ongoing advancements in technology have now provided us with the ability to print our own pictures at home, and soon the days of dropping off film rolls for developing and waiting for up to a week for the finished pictures will be a thing of the past. The only items necessary for printing pictures yourself is a computer, proper photo paper, and a printer. Digital imaging technology has made it possible to immediately download imagery onto a computer for viewing and emailing or to print pictures on special or plain paper.
Special software makes it possible to transmit digital pictures from the digital camera to a computer. After the images are transferred, pictures are displayed on your screen and you are given the option of editing, printing, or saving each image. Just knowing the steps to create high-quality photographs will heighten your ability to print excellent pictures. Software tends to differ somewhat with some decreasing the size of pictures making them great for emailing or posting on the web; however, this is not good for printing. Be sure that the software you use will not automatically downsize images. When printing, one desires full resolution of 300 pixels per inch to produce high quality prints, and this may very well depend on the type of digital camera you possess.
A pixel is one of the individual dots that collectively create a picture. Cameras are usually presented in terms of megapixels, and this indicates the total amount (in millions) of pixels the camera is capable of handling or processing. The number of pixels per image is already set inside the camera and increasing the size of the picture spreads fewer pixels per inch making it a bit blurry. Increasing the size too much drastically reduces the clarity and appearance of imagery. Good quality imagery is achieved with a resolution of at least 300 pixels per inch. An added option with digital technology is the ability to change images before printing. Colors may be changed, lighting changed, images cropped, angles changed, in addition to the ability to completely erase undesirable objects.
One must be aware the each time a JPEG image is saved, some of the data is lost as quality decreases with saving. Avoid this by minimizing the number of times you edit pictures and save the image to your computer under a different file title. Another tip to preserve image quality is to save or store pictures in a TIFF file – then you can edit many times without losing any photo quality. A TIFF file is a tagged image format file with a header of fixed information fields (tags) that include information like image dimensions and color space specifications. It is versatile and enables one to define application specific information – private or custom tags. The framework used by TIFF is called IFD or Image File Directory, and it is a set of tags that the TIFF writer software wishes to determine and specify.
There are two methods for consideration when ready to print pictures from a digital camera – print them yourself or transfer them via computer to a shop that processes and prints photographs. Online services enable one to upload imagery to retail servers for processing with the pictures being either mailed back to you or available for pickup at a designated location within a short period of time – often in less than 24 hours.
Such are the conveniences of digital photography – capture images and enjoy the experience more by printing them yourself.

Telemetry Uses in Technology
The future of communications is wireless and this includes telemetry applications. Telemetry is the process by which measurements are collected and made and transmitted to equipment in other locations for viewing, monitoring, and recording. Its origins go back to the early 1900’s when data transmissions were monitored on a number of electric power stations by a central command center. Telemetry then underwent extensive research and development by NASA who perfected telemetry and expanded its uses to include commercialization of high-data-rate technology and products for use in private sectors.
This process of privatization of this technology enabled NASA employees leaving the agency to join industries and use their technological education and expertise to further invent and develop products used in commercial markets around the world. Ground station equipment performs both traditional and bridging/switching functions to interconnect local and regional communication networks with other space and ground communications networks. Advances in wireless technologies have experienced great things relative to telemetry – from wire transmissions to radio transmissions to global systems for mobile transmissions. Telemetry uses include monitoring of huge systems like satellites, power plants, oil rigs, geological and meteorological, logistics, tracking endangered species, and monitoring manned and unmanned air and space flights to simple tasks like remote meter readings.
An example of one of the great beneficiaries of this technology is the medical industry and communications equipment. Where we would be and how many of us might not have survived medical emergencies or trauma had it not been for wireless medical telemetry technology? There are multiple uses of telemetry monitoring including wireless stress tests and ECG monitoring, and this ability enables continued growth and expansion of parameters in monitoring telemetry.
These new wireless systems are functional not only in hospital settings but also ambulances, emergency aircraft, and other emergency medical support agencies. The technology enables treatment of critical patients in lower acuity beds and increases the number of telemetry channels needed eliminating the need for more expensive intensive and critical care hospital units and associated personnel. It is more cost effective in all ways as the additional channels and bandwidth supports more parameters and has the potential to both provide better patient care and reduce health care costs – delivering real benefits to patients and medical caregivers.
